CONTEXTUALIZATION
Higher Education plays a leading role in the socioeconomic and cultural development of nations, configuring itself as the epicenter of knowledge production, innovation and the formation of qualified human capital. However, the exponential growth in demand for higher education, combined with the globalization of quality standards, poses substantial challenges to academic institutions, which need to ensure not only the relevance and sustainability of their programs, but also their competitiveness in an increasingly demanding international scenario.
Quality assessment and assurance (QA) are essential tools for institutional strengthening, promoting equity and innovation. Harvey and Green (1993) understand quality as a multidimensional concept, encompassing excellence, consistency and transformation. Thus, in addition to conventional indicators, such as graduation rates, employability and academic performance, other factors are decisive for a holistic assessment of higher education. In this context, the capacity of educational institutions to foster critical, reflective and independent thinking within the academic and scientific community stands out, as well as to articulate academic curricula with the demands of the job market. Initiatives such as partnerships with the productive sector and the incorporation of professional practices throughout academic training are fundamental strategies in this regard.
In this scenario, the Pedagogical University of Maputo (UP-Maputo), committed to academic excellence and the promotion of inclusive and sustainable higher education, plays a central role in the discussion on the challenges of quality in African and, in particular, Mozambican higher education. The institution offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, duly accredited by the National Council for the Assessment of Quality in Higher Education, based on principles of pedagogical innovation and training of highly qualified professionals.
In this context, this international conference aims to debate the complexity of quality in Higher Education, emphasizing the African and Mozambican academic reality. The event will promote the exchange of experiences and good practices, discussing innovative methodologies and approaches that transcend traditional indicators. UP-Maputo, through its academic structures and its commitment to continuous improvement, will contribute significantly to the debate on the construction of a quality higher education that is sustainable and aligned with contemporary demands.
